The Republic of Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean consisting of a double chain of twenty-six atolls. It is the smallest Asian country in both population and land area. With an average ground level of 1.5 meters above sea level, it is the lowest country in the world. In 2012, the population of Maldives was 328,000.

Youth represent an untapped resource for development of the Maldives and there is no public agency that is currently working on youth issues in the Maldives. With support from  the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, work is being done to better understand the overall status of male and female youth in Maldives and the issues they face. This includes understanding risk and protective factors by gender in order to create awareness among policy makers and practitioners about youth issues.
