Sri Lanka is an island nation in the northern Indian Ocean with a population of just over 20 million people. Sri Lanka is the oldest democracy in South Asia, and is religiously, ethnically and linguistically diverse. The country is quickly moving towards middle-income country status, however, a three decade long internal conflict has affected Sri Lanka’s growth trajectory.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and The World Bank have collaborated to work in the post-conflict regions of Sri Lanka through two recipient-executed windows — North East Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and the North East Local Service Improved Project. Both windows focus on improving local service delivery, particularly for people returning home after the long conflict period. Both windows also focus on improving access for vulnerable groups — including women, disabled people and other socially excluded persons
